The City of Calgary approximates that there are over 7 million trees. The canopy covers just over 8% of the city. The dry prairie, chinooks and unexpected snowfalls all work against building our urban forest.
Riparian areas along rivers are one of the few places where they are a natural feature. Glenmore Park has the most trees, 10,198. McKenzie Towne is home to 9,348 trees, the most of any neighbourhood where people actually live. The highest density is in Queen’s Park Village, with 5,531 trees. The highest estimated tree value in a neighbourhood is Varsity, $31,402,269. The City assesses the total value at $1.3 billion.

According to the City of Calgary website: “the map shows trees owned by the City, values provided are estimated based on the species, size and condition of trees found within the community. The City of Calgary uses the International Society of Arboriculture’s Guide for Plant Appraisal (9th edition) to estimate values.”
